Description
Reyneke Biodynamic Syrah 2018 is 100% Syrah produced biodynamically from organic grapes. It is from Reyneke’s Biodynamic range (Reyneke also has an Organic range). Johan Reyneke, Grower of the Year in Tim Atkin’s 2020 South Africa Report, used to blend Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc for this wine but decided that the spice, pepper and perfume of the Syrah or Shiraz were a little lost in the blend. So now the focus for this South African wine is purely on the Syrah or Shiraz. As a result Reyneke Biodynamic Syrah 2018 is intense in its colour, aromas and flavours. On the nose there are complex aromas including dark fruits, spices, white pepper, liquorice and ‘fynbos’, the local perfumed vegetation. The palate is similarly complex and full of ripe fruits – red berries, blueberries and blackberries together with white pepper, dark liquorice, herbs and a savoury meatiness despite the wine’s relatively young age. The tannins are evident but rounded and the wine full-bodied and velvety in texture. After all that intensity and complexity of flavours, there is a lovely long fresh finish of redcurrants and a silky texture to this wine.
Awarded 95 / 100 points and named by Decanter magazine as a “Must-try Red”, Reyneke Biodynamic Syrah 2018 was described by them as “Super value for this delicious biodynamic field blend of Syrah.” This wine will keep for a few more years yet but can certainly be enjoyed now.
I’ve been stocking a number of Reyneke wines since Wines With Attitude began. If you want to find the most ethical wines, you cannot go wrong with these. With different ranges of wine in different price brackets, there is something for every wine drinker. Why not try the lovely Reyneke Chenin Blanc which has been a firm favourite of mine since I tried it all those years ago.
