Description
Pyros Appellation Malbec 2020 is 100% Argentinian Malbec but it is not just any old Argentinian Malbec. This is a terroir-focussed Malbec and comes from one of the best vineyards in Argentina. Pyros vineyards and winery are based in the glacial Pedernal Valley in the foothills of the Andes in the province of San Juan. The land here is desert and semi-desert but Pyros is at the highest point of the Pedernal Valley at 1400 metres above sea level which moderates the hot, dry conditions. In fact the sunny days and much cooler nights create the perfect storm, i.e. long periods of sunlight to ripen grapes and coolness to keep the acidity in the grapes high. This makes for deep-coloured, concentrated but refreshing wines with intense fruity aromas and flavours and tannins which mean the wines can keep for a number of years. The limestone and sedimentary soils are unique and also contribute to the complexity of Pyros Appellation Malbec 2020.
Complex and elegant like its sister wine, Pyros Special Blend 2014, Pyros Appellation Malbec 2020 tastes of black fruits with smoky balsamic and spicy notes and has a lovely rounded mouthfeel. The lovely fruit flavours and the natural acidity in this wine make the mouth water and give the wine its longevity though it is definitely drinkable now.
Pyros was part of a bigger winery but now operates on a smaller scale and independently. The Pedernal Valley, only recognised in 2007 as an official wine region, contains vineyards at high altitude (up to 1500 metres) with granite, flint and slate soils (pedernal is Spanish for flint). It is widely recognised that the best Argentinian Malbecs are grown at altitude.
