Description
Márcio Lopes Pequeños Rebentos Loureiro 2019 is a crisp, dry, modern style of Vinho Verde from Portugal and it is a low alcohol white wine at just 11.5%. Very pale lemon in colour, it has a slight pink tinge to it; it looks like it has a spritz as many Vinho Verdes have but there is no fizz on the palate. There are good fruit flavours and acidity which mean that the wine is fruity and refreshing – and dry (in the past residual sugar or sweetness was needed to balance with high acidity). Márcio Lopes Pequeños Rebentos Loureiro is a lovely crisp wine is produced from the Loureiro grape (several other grapes are permitted in the appellation). Loureiro is aromatic and produces aromas and flavours of lime, jasmine, bayleaves, subtle apricot and lemon verbena as displayed in this lovely light wine which is still drinking beautifully. Why not also try the 2021 vintage?
Vinho Verde is in the cool, verdant north west of Portugal, which has a strong influence from the Atlantic ocean. Traditionally Vinho Verde wines have had a slight fizz, have been a little sweet and have generally been non-vintage wine. Whilst that style is still available, it is good to see some different and more interesting styles being developed – single vintage, single-varietal, terroir-focused, still, dry and age-worthy wines. The Loureiro for this wine is grown in sub-region Ponte de Lima. Soils are granitic and free draining, altitude is close to sea level.
Márcio Lopes farms just 5 hectares sustainably and also buys grapes from selected growers who practise sustainable viticulture without the use of herbicides. The winemaking is low intervention and Márcio ferments the wine in small stainless steel tanks using natural yeasts, aiming to make wines with balance that reflect the terroir. The wine is then kept on fine lees for five months in stainless steel tanks before bottling with light filtration. This wine is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
