Description

Guerrieri Rizzardi 3 Cru Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2018 is an exceptional wine from what started out as a difficult vintage; early rain turned eventually to warmer weather which brought complex fruit aromatics and flavours to the grapes. The blend in 2018 is comprised of 45% Corvinone, 20% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 9% Barbera and 6% Sangiovese. Grapes sourced from Guerrieri Rizzardi’s three single vineyards – Calcarole, Rovereti and Pojega – are selected for this wine, with Calcarole’s grapes adding weight and elegance to the blend; all Calcarole wine went into this Amarone in 2018 after being aged for 3 years.

As with all Amarone, the grapes that comprise this wine undergo a drying process prior to fermentation, resulting in increased concentration and complexity. This wine displays an intense colour, aroma and flavour profile, with softening tannins as it ages in the bottle. More Corvinone was included this vintage for its colour, tannins and higher sugar levels; More Corvinone adds colour, tannins and higher sugar levels. Corvina imparts elegance, acidity and complex aromas to this wine,  Rondinella contributes floral notes to the aroma, and Barbera brings a combination of acidity, body and fruit.

On the nose, this wine presents ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit aromas, which are complemented by more savoury flavours and warm spices from the oak. With high alcohol at 16%, this wine is rich and full-bodied, but the acidity ensures it remains well-balanced and not overly heavy. As it ages, it will continue to develop and reveal its full potential though it is drinking beautifully now.

How to enjoy

The producer suggests consuming this wine with “rich stews and casseroles, games dishes and with grill/barbecue fare”. The rich, elegant wine suits richly flavoured food like rib of beef, venison, pheasant and strong cheeses such as mature Cimbro, Pecorino Vecchio and mature cheddar. It also pairs well with slightly sweet dishes, most other cheeses including Parmesan and Gorgonzola, cured meats, robust pasta dishes, Risotto all’amarone, dishes flavoured with balsamic vinegar, braised beef, lamb, strong-flavoured meats like wild boar, ox or veal cheek and oxtail, Wagyu beef etc.

Serve at: 16 – 18°C

Producer's Notes

“The 2018 is one of those rare vintages in which all the Calcarole and Villa Rizzardi made was – after 3 years ageing – eventually blended into 3CRU, making a challenging vintage into a great one for this Amarone.”
