Description
Domaine Sève Pouilly Fuissé is a lovely fresh white Burgundy from my favourite part of the Burgundy wine region, the Mâconnais in the south. In fact Domaine Sève is based right under the famous Roche de Solutré (Rock of Solutré) and benefits from two different types of soils – Pouilly terroir where clay and marls give the wine a full, rounded mouthfeel and Solutré terroir where limestone gives mineral characteristics to the wine. The vines have an average age of 40 years old which contribute to the complexity of the wine.
Whilst Domaine Sève Pouilly Fuissé, like many white Burgundy wines, is part vinified in oak, this is a predominantly fruity Chardonnay. It smells and tastes of citrus fruits, ripe pears and apples with cream. There are also floral notes on the nose. The oak lends more to the texture of the wine bringing a creamy mouth-coating feel. The hints of spicy notes from the oak on the palate balance beautifully with the fruit flavours and the minerality. The wine has a long finish with the freshness of the minerality that is peculiar to Pouilly-Fuissé.
Domaine Sève is today run by the 5th generation of Sève winemakers. Brother and sister, Antoine and Mathilde, practise sustainable, environmentally-friendly viticulture and aim to perfect the quality of the terroir-focused wines. For another fabulous white Burgundy, try Bachey-Legros Bourgogne Blanc St Martin.
