Description
De Conti Appassimento Rosso 2020 or to give it its full name, De’Conti Esploratore 100 x 100 Appassimento Rosso is a rich, creamy red wine from Puglia in Southern Italy. It’s a blend of two local grape varieties – Negroamaro and Primitivo (known as Zinfandel in other parts of the wine-making world). The winemaker likes to combine less well-known grapes like Negroamaro with better-known varietals like Primitivo in order to promote and “protect Italian wine biodiversity”.
For De Conti Appassimento Rosso 2020 the grapes are dried naturally – just as they are in Amarone – in order to produce particularly intense and complex flavours without the Amarone price tag. The wine is deep garnet in colour and the concentrated aromas of dark fruits like plums, cherries and blackcurrants give a hint to the flavours of this wine. There are also floral and spicy notes. The first thing you notice on tasting De Conti Appassimento is the creamy texture, followed by those lovely intense plum and blackcurrant flavours with the vanilla and cinnamon notes in the background. This wine is very drinkable; the tannins are there to provide structure and longevity – it will keep until at least 2028 – but they are so soft and integrated that they are hardly noticeable. It really is a great value wine that tastes more expensive than it is!
