Description
This could be a wine from Pomerol in a blind tasting but it is Lalande de Pomerol. Just like Pomerol, Château Tournefeuille Lalande de Pomerol has gone back to the classic blend for the 2019 vintage, roughly two thirds Merlot and one third Cabernet Franc; the warm weather that year meant that Cabernet Sauvignon was not required to add structure and that riper black fruit aromas and flavours dominate. The 2017 vintage which is still in stock has a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon to give the wine a bit of backbone due to the cooler weather.
As in previous vintages, the 2019 Château Tournefeuille Lalande de Pomerol feels silky smooth in the mouth; it tastes of mature blackberries, blackcurrants and ripe plums with raspberry and mineral notes. Hints of cocoa and coconut will develop further as the wine ages in bottle. This is a prime example of Lalande de Pomerol and it is just like Pomerol.
Situated on the Pomerol / Lalande de Pomerol border with Château Pétrus just across the river Barbanne, Château Tournefeuille benefits from a hill-top position and the best clay and gravel soils of the region. This means its Lalande de Pomerol is powerful and its tannins soft. Run by the Petit family the Château practises sustainable agriculture including traditional ploughing and manual harvesting. The vines range from 10 to over 60 years old.
