Tasting Notes

If you want to try a slightly more developed vintage of this fabulous wine I have some equally fabulous 2012 in stock.

The story

Portugal's wines have really improved over the last ten years or so; forget those astringent, highly tannic wines of the past and welcome, particularly in this example, to a smooth velvety, fruity rich wine. Touriga Nacional, also seen in port, is a tannic grape and the tannins are evident in the dry finish of this wine however they will soften further over time.

The wine

Lower in alcohol than earlier vintages, this 2013 seems even more elegant and smooth. Cherries and eucalyptus on the nose. Understandably this is reminiscent of port on the palate with rich, complex flavours including red cherries, berries, plums, herbs and sweet spices. The finish is long and velvety smooth.

It is worth decanting and letting this wine breathe for an hour or so before serving; read more about decanting in my blog. This is drinking beautifully now and will improve in the bottle for a couple more years yet given the acidity and tannins which will soften further; if you can resist it and like a richer, more developed style, keep till 2020 or 2021.

Food Pairing

Recommended with red meat dishes - beef, duck, lamb

Producer's Notes

"A deep violet colour. On the nose, exuberant aromas of gum cistus and wild basil with hints of orange blossom. Intense and complex on the palate, showing layers of wild blueberries combined with fresh resinous and spicy notes ending in a long juicy finish."

"From Churchill's Quinta da Gricha estate, this is a pure Touriga Nacional. Rich and delicately perfumed, it is a ripe fruity wine, full of tannins as well as concentrated black fruits. Wood aging has smoothed some of the tannins, although the wine needs to age further. Drink from 2018."

"A little more intense and spiced than the red blend. Firmer and chewier and more scented, and thicker on the palate..."

Elegant, velvety, fruity rich wine from Portugal’s Touriga Nacional grape; reminiscent of port with rich, complex flavours including red cherries, berries, plums, herbs and sweet spices but much lighter in body
