Description
Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir 2020 has a lot going for it – an excellent vintage, an amazing vineyard position, old vines and award-winning wine producers using classic Burgundian wine-making techniques, all of which combine to produce this complex, smooth Pinot Noir. Ripe fruits did not prevent the signature elegance or vibrant freshness of this wine. In terms of flavours, it’s hard to know where to start as the wine is so complex. On the nose there’s a smoky fruit vibe of dark cherry and mulberries with earth forest floor aromas so reminiscent of Burgundian Pinot. On the palate red fruits and spices also come into play and the refreshing acidity leaves the mouth watering. Tannins are there but soft and integrated; this wine seems older than it is and is definitely a “contemplation wine”.
Pegasus Bay summarises the vineyard and why it produces such high quality grapes: “Within the Waipara Valley Pegasus Bay vineyard gets maximum protection from the Pacific’s easterly breezes by being tucked up under the lee of the Teviotdale Range. Its sheltered position, but proximity to the sea, give it warm days, cool nights and a dry autumn, resulting in a very prolonged ripening period. This promotes intense flavour development and optimal ripeness, while retaining good natural acidity.” Pegasus Bay practises sustainable viticulture, using natural methods to counteract pest and diseases rather than applying pesticides and herbicides.I have other Pegasus Bay wines in the Wines With Attitude portfolio including their lovely dry Bel Canto Riesling.
