This wine is produced by Man O'War
descibed by the Wine Advocate as "without a doubt one of New Zealand’s greatest wineries in the making
and one to watch." 2010 was its first release of this "Bordeaux style blend" comprising 61.5% Cabernet Franc, 23.2% Merlot and 15.3% Malbec
. All Man O'War wines are named after battleships - Warspite is "one of a new class of “fast” battleships... blessed with a thrilling combination of elegance and power... and emulates the graceful power of the Royal Navy’s Grand Old Dame".
Usually in the shadows of its progeny, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc is often considered a minority grape in a Bordeaux blend
such as this. Comprising here 61.5% of the blend, true to its reputation the Cabernet Franc provides lots of fruit and a slight hint of herbaceous leafiness
. This is far less tannic and the oak influence far less obvious than might be expected. In fact this is a very smooth
wine filled with rich, sweet fruit flavours
- I was torn between the Smooth Elegant and Rich Spicy Reds classifications. On the nose this has a lovely red berry and floral perfume. The wine fills the mouth generously with rich, ripe red berries and its warm, smooth texture. This is a real treat
If you want to try a 100% Cabernet Franc wine, see Domaine Gayda’s Figure Libre Cabernet Franc Pays d'Oc IGP
from the Languedoc-Roussillon region also in Wines With Attitude®
This wine would match well with roast chicken, pork, beef, lamb and veal. In addition it copes well with creamy dishes, the sweet fruit cutting through the cream, and fresh herb flavours.
Beware - there may be a little sediment in this wine so it may be best to decant it. Read our blog on how and when to decant.
"The blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec was inspired by the great vineyards of St Emilion in particular Chateau Cheval Blanc. Our Warspite is a supremely concentrated lush fruitful wine with an abundance of red berry fruit, floral lift and a note of wild herb on the nose. The palate is very supple and rich with a firm graphite-like grip of tannins on the finish. Warspite 2010 will reward decanting in its youth and will also reward long patient cellaring with a wine of immense complexity, power and longevity."

"The deep garnet-colored 2010 Warspite is a blended red dominated by 61.5% Cabernet Franc with a balance of 23.2% Merlot and 15.3% Malbec fruit sourced from vineyards planted in 2005 and 2006. The nose shows a lovely red currant, red cherry and mulberry nose with hints of cinnamon and roses plus delivers a nice, savory finish. This wine has loads of potential as the vines get older. Drink it now to 2021+... This is without a doubt one of New Zealand’s greatest wineries in the making and one to watch."

"The first release of this label. Bright, youthful purple-red colour. Vibrantly pure black and redcurrant fruit aromas show with a tight elegance and purity. The bouquet is attractively fragrant with lifted florals and spice nuances. Full-bodied, this combines concentration, depth and intensity with an elegance from succulently sweet, ripe dark red berry fruits and fragrant plum notes. Layers of spices, liquorice and lifted oak cedar show, all enhanced by fresh, poised acidity. Fine-grained tannins underline the palate, allowing the fruit to feature. This has great line and length with sweet fruit notes providing luscious highlights. A beautifully linear and vibrantly fruity, modern Bordeaux-styled wine to keep 8-10+ years. 61.5% Cabernet Franc, 23.2% Merlot and 15.3% Malbec from Ponui Island, co-fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged in 25% new French oak."
