I'd been missing a Barolo from the portfolio and searching high and low for one displaying the required quality when I found one quite close to home - from Aurelio Settimo whose Langhe Nebbiolo
I ave been enjoying for some time.
2008 was not an easy vintage for Barolo with the result that the wines were very varied in quality. All had pretty austere tannins meaning that the wines needed time to soften if treated carefully in the intervening years. Aurelio Settimo has managed well the tannins in its single vineyard Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 2008; though they weren't particularly high initially, the tannins were quite drying and now they are soft and well integrated. One advantage of a cooler vintage is that the grapes were left to ripen for longer which helped them develop complexity. The best examples of the 2008 vintage, like this one, are considered "classic" Barolo and since the vintage was not considered the best initially 2008s are looking especially good value - so treat yourself!
In summary this is a fantastic Barolo from a single vineyard, Le Rocche dell'Annunziata di la Morra, considered to be of Grand Cru stature. It has the classic rose perfume on the nose with cherries and hints of raspberry. The texture is silky smooth. Very elegant.
Recommended to drink with game, goose, steak, braised beef, delicately flavoured offal, mushrooms and milder cheeses including goats' and sheeps' cheese

"Just mid ruby with bright orange rim. A little like Mostarda – candied fruit in mustard syrup – and a little chalky. Liquorice. Elegant with vibrant acidity and embryonic sweet fruit and well balanced but firm tannins. Classic."
