Tasting Notes

I have just sold out of the 2011 vintage - but I do have the super smooth 2013 vintage in stock.

The story

If you are a fan of Barolo, give this wine a try; it is nicknamed "baby Barolo" by winemaker, Tiziana Settimo. It is made from the same grape, Nebbiolo, though the grapes come from younger vineyards; yields are kept at the same levels as the Aurelio Settimo Barolo and there is a shorter maceration on the skins but the biggest difference is that it is not aged in oak

The wine

It smells just like a Barolo though slightly less intense - red fruits including raspberries, also ripe black cherries with a hint of roses; a chocolate aroma is starting to develop. On the palate, cherries, chocolate and violet on a long finish. As this wine is unoaked, the only tannins come from the grape itself and whilst tannins are naturally high in the Nebbiolo grape, good wine-making and age mean that they are well integrated (so not drying on the palate) and provide a good structure to this wine. Medium to full bodied and really beautiful.
Update to tasting note - April 2018 - this wine is drinking beautifully at the moment, the tannins incredibly soft and the wine really elegant and delicious.
I've just decided to add the 2013 vintage to the portfolio as well. Or you may want to treat yourself to the single vineyard Barolo from the same producer; it's sublime. And you can also buy it as a gift/ single bottle pack.

Food Pairing

Recommended to drink with game, goose, steak, braised beef, delicately flavoured offal, mushrooms and milder cheeses including goats' and sheeps' cheese

Producer's Notes

"Our Langhe DOC Nebbiolo 2011 shows a lovely bright, light garnet red colour. The nose is intense, with fruity notes of blackberries and raspberries, floral overtones of violets and balsamic hints of cocoa and liquorice. The vinosity of the Nebbiolo grape comes out on the mouth, with moderate tannins making the taste well-balanced and rounded."

Described by Jancis Robinson in Oct 2013
“'My little Barolo’, says Signora Settimo (daughter of Aurelio, who runs the estate now) – because it is made in exactly the same way as for the normal Barolo, but from young vines and without any oak. Eight days of skin maceration including alcoholic fermentation.

If you are a fan of Barolo, give this wine a try; it is made from the same Nebbiolo grape but is not aged in oak.  Cherries, chocolate and violet on a long, smooth finish.
