Description

Following organic principles since 2009, Château Moya has been formally certified as organic (“agriculture biologique”) since 2013. The wine-maker is the same Damien Landouar and the wine Merlot-dominant though 93% compared to 85% for the Gaby. The nose and palate are both dominated by red fruits – redcurrants, raspberries, ripe plums – as would be expected of a young Merlot dominated wine and there’s an added bonus of blackcurrants. Both Moya and Gaby pick their grapes as late as possible to ensure full maturity. This wine has been aged in oak – split 50% in new barrels and 50% in 1 to 2 year old barrels – there are only hints of oak ageing on the palate. Whilst old-style Moya which I loved was a very young fruit-forward wine, this vintage tastes more evolved as if it has more than 5 years on the clock. The tannins are soft and integrated. This is a very elegant wine.

Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, formerly known as Côtes de Castillon, is one of the satellite appellations of Bordeaux, situated to the east of St Emilion. Château Moya is the sister château to Château Gaby whose Canon-Fronsac AOC is also available from Wines With Attitude®.

Food Pairing

Producer's Notes

“On the nose, the wooden, toasted, and spicy notes stand out. Ripe red fruit notes are present. On the palate, it has a frank, very round onset with a beautiful evolution towards acidity. The red fruits are present throughout the tasting, and the tannins are well blended and round. An elegant and smooth wine.”

”Organic grapes and, although very sweet, much more relaxed than most of the wines from this stable. Drying end still but some lively expression first.”

Bear in mind this review was written several years ago and the drying end is not drying at all as the tannins have softened in bottle!
