Tasting Notes

The wine

I love this wine as much as I loved the 2011 vintage. It's just as the producer says below, a classic McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon - blackcurrant, chocolate - with that hint of freshness from eucalyptus often found in New World Cabernets plus interesting floral and port notes from the Touriga Nacional; more usually found in Port and in some red wines from the Douro, Touriga Nacional comprises 9% of the blend.

The freshness of this wine makes it seem a little lighter than some Cabernets but don't be fooled - this is a substantial wine with really lovely concentrated flavours and grippy tannins, i.e. they are noticeable giving the wine some structure but they are also quite velvety.  This is a lovely, concentrated wine.

Food Pairing

This concentrated medium-bodied wine with noticeable yet velvety tannins is a great match for beef, lamb, goose and game; also a good match for mushrooms, hard cheeses and mild blue cheeses

Producer's Notes

"This wine displays all the hallmarks of classic McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon – blackcurrant, chocolate with a hint of herbaceousness delivered on a rich palate of dense, firm tannins. But JR Gantos loves his port, and couldn’t help adding a dash of Touriga Nacional, which gives a varietal floral lift. St Estephe on steroids meets the Douro!

Colour: Deep Crimson.  Bouquet: Lifted cassis and florals with a hint of leafiness.  Palate: Rich, vibrant blackcurrant and chocolate flavours with a hint of eucalypt are balanced with a core of dense, firm tannins"

"Inky black cherry colour. Gloriously expressive with slightly minty and earthy blackcurrant fruit – just a touch herbaceous to preempt any otiose sweetness. This has amazingly youthful and vibrant fruit on the palate – you would never guess it is almost six years old, and it is only just starting to show some complexity of bottle age. Excellent freshness and very fine tannin texture. Powerful but refined finish. Very long. Packed with pleasure and still no hurry to drink this. The oak shows in some sweet spice but is fully integrated."

"Very dark colour, rich and malty on the nose – reminds me of fruit loaf! Showing some nice maturity too, with an oily, tarry note to finish."

"... Full-bodied and powerful; a slash of bitter chocolate accompanies the penetrating mix of redcurrant, blackcurrant and black olive, oak as yet to soften the overall profile of what will be a long lived wine."

"A thick, juicy red with dark-berry, chocolate and light toasted-coffee-bean character on the nose and palate. Full body, chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2015."

Classic McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon - blackcurrant, chocolate - with that hint of freshness from eucalyptus often found in New World Cabernets plus interesting floral and port notes from the Touriga Nacional. I am loving this wine!
