Tasting Notes

I've just run out of this wine but I may be able to get more so email me if you would like some. Or why not try the Flechas Gran Corte instead?

The story

Argentinean Malbecs can vary greatly in terms of quality. Malbec grown at higher altitudes in Argentina are generally more elegant, with finer tannins and higher acidity. This one from Flechas de los Andes at 1,100m, does not disappoint in terms of elegance and balance and also shows the luscious fruit characteristics of Malbec.

The wine

The winery is an alliance between members of two French wine families, Baron Benjamin de Rothchild and Laurent Dassault, which may explain why it is somewhat reminiscent of a Bordeaux wine. It is complex both on the nose and on the palate with many aromas and flavours - creamy dark fruits including black cherries, plums and blueberries plus coffee and hints of liquorice and violets. Subtle smoky spices like pepper and cinammon give a slightly warm feel to the medium-bodied wine and the lovely smooth texture gives it a certain elegance. This wine has a long, long finish.

Allow the wine to breathe for 30 minutes before drinking. This wine may throw off a little sediment so it is a good idea to decant the wine.

Food Pairing

Recommended to drink with steak (Argentinean of course!), other beef dishes including chilli con carne and other spiced dishes, lamb including tagines, venison, game casseroles, strong flavoured offal, strong cheeses and chocolate

Producer's Notes

Gran Malbec is a 100% malbec whose goal is to embody the characteristic features the grape derives from the Vista Flores soil; it is a rich, concentrated and very fruity wine that has become a reference in the region.

"The 2011 Gran Malbec is matured one third in new barriques, one third in used ones, and the rest in stainless steel for one year. However, the nose is very spicy with an aromatic core of plums and cherries along with plenty of vanilla, cinnamon and smoke. The palate shows some dusty tannins and moderate acidity."

"Traditional, classic nose, with notes of sandalwood and pink pepper. Very complex, meaty and juicy palate with firm tannins and showing some evolution. A gastronomic Malbec asking for red meat, with lots of personality."

"Good dark medium ruby. Aromas of black fruits, smoked meat and lees are accented by a light peppery herbaceousness. Riper than the 2013 Aguaribay Malbec but also with firmer acidity to frame and intensify the flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate and violet. This nicely concentrated wine finishes with substantial building, chewy tannins and very good length. But still a bit narrow and in need of more time in bottle to expand."

Elegant Malbec full of fruit aromas and flavours - creamy dark fruits including cherries, plums and blueberries, with coffee and smoky spices - pepper and cinammon; a complex wine that is lovely and smooth in texture
