Description

Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 benefited from a great vintage with dry autumn conditions and cooler night temperatures which prolongs the Cabernet Sauvignon hanging time and leads to elegance and perfumed wine with what Boekenhoutskloof describe as “classic claret-like fruit profiles”. About 10% Cabernet Franc was again added for extra fragrance and finesse. This wine will develop a little more over a few years but the warm vintage ensured that it is ready to drink now. Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 tastes divine – with complex layers of fruit, spice and mineral flavours – blackberries, blueberries, mulberries with nutmeg, clove, graphite (like the pencil aromas of St Julién Bordeaux) and a touch of dark chocolate. The wine has a super smooth texture and soft, rounded tannins, all-in-all very moreish!

The Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for making fine furniture. The Boekenhoutskloof label features seven chairs, in the words of the winery “to pay tribute to the skills of 18th century craftsmen and their achievements in creating beauty from natural sources, just like the pursuit of fine wine-making.” Marc Kent is the chief winemaker and driving force behind Boekenhoutskloof. He likes to experiment with the unconventional but his principal commitment is to quality. For a stunning white wine from the same producer, try this Semillon.

How to enjoy

This wine, which usually needs six or seven years before reaching its peak, is drinking beautifully now and will develop a little more over the next few years.

Serve at 12 – 16°C

Producer's Notes

“The nose is dark, intense and brooding with aromas of black cherries, cardamom, sweet tobacco, espresso and subtle whiffs of perfume. The dark fruit character of the nose follows through onto an exceptionally complex, juicy palate with gentle nuances of ripe plums, violets, black olives, cloves, and liquorice. The mid-palate is focused, lithe and elegant with very fine, cocoa powdery tannins. The wine is medium bodied, very balanced with an earthy, layered character, covering the entire spectrum of berry fruit – from tart red plums to rich blue and black berries. The finish is svelte, clean and dry, peppery and lingering, with hints of dried cranberry, tar, graphite and smoke.”

“An increasing proportion of Cabernet Franc apparently because it retains aroma and freshness better in hot, dry summers than Cabernet Sauvignon. Mid to dark crimson. Some real grace here on the nose. Round, gentle tannins with a sweet undertow and a beginning, middle and end. Light charge of fine tannins.”

“Bold and juicy black fruits fill the glass of the 2017 Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon and mingle with rose petals and hints of cinnamon. The florals are soft and delicate on the palate. The wine is rich and bold and structured with well-defined tannins. The finish is fresh, vibrant and long, with good structuring tannins and a full body. This wine is showing good complexity. It was traditionally vinified in concrete tanks then aged in the newly installed Oxoline system [a barrel handling system], comprised of French barriques.”
