Description

Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner “Kremser Weinberge” 2020 is an example of classic Austrian Gruner Veltliner. It is a dry, white wine with a mid-gold colour; the colour comes from the Grüner Veltliner grape and not from any oak as this is an unoaked white wine.  Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner Kremser Weinberge has predominantly fruity aromas and flavours – citrus fruits, particularly lime, lemon zest and green apple. As the wine opens up, you will find with floral aromas and hints of almond and white pepper, the hallmark of the Grüner Veltliner grape. When you take a sip, you will be struck by the complexity of the wine, a mix of fruit, herbs evident in a hint of thyme, spices including that white pepper, flowers and minerality. Whilst it is a complex wine with a smooth, medium body, Grüner Veltliner “Kremser Weinberge” has lively acidity which keeps the wine tasting fresh.

Grüner Veltliner is very underrated in my opinion partly as it is a little different from the norm and partly because people often think it is going to be slightly sweet. There are some medium-dry versions around – the grape has very fruity characteristics and in warm regions particularly the fruit can show as over-ripe almost tropical fruit. However Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner “Kremser Weinberge” 2020 is dry, unoaked with complex aromas and flavours, luscious mouthfeel and yet a refreshing crispness.

Based in Lower Austria, Weingut Türk is a producer whose philosophy is to produce long-lived, characterful wines rather than “large volume wines for the short-term market”. They practise minimal intervention preferring to let the wines “express the soil, the microclimate and unique vintage character”. Kremser Weinberge grapes come from two vineyards in the estate with vines averaging 50 years old. Rocky soils help to produce intense, savoury and elegant wines. Or for a step up, try Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner ‘Ried Obere Kremser Sandgrube’ 2021.

Grüner Veltliner is an Austrian indigenous grape, in fact the most widely grown grape in Austria. It is known for producing fresh, dry white wines with complex flavours including a mix of fruit and spicy pepperiness and fresh acidity. The classification of Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner “Kremser Weinberge” 2020 is Kremstal DAC which means that it is a quality wine (Qualitätswein) typical of the Kremstal sub-region and must be “dry, … well-balanced, [with] concentration commensurate with that typical of the specific vintage year”.  To verify the quality, each Qualitätswein is tested and once approved receives a unique state control number which is incorporated into the seal or screwcap.

How to enjoy

The producer says ” Grüner Veltliner from loess soils are the all-rounder among the white wines. From cold and warm appetizers, salads and seafood that harmonize with the fine salt seasoning of the wine, to spaghetti carbonara with fresh herbal sauce, which complements the spice of the wine. White meat accompanies this expression of Grüner Veltliner perfectly and it also tastes great by itself.”

The wine has sufficient body to stand up to a wide range of foods incuding Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese dishes, fish and chips, smoked salmon, cured meats, mushroom based dishes, most other vegetables including the often hard to match asparagus and artichokes, herb-based dishes and goats cheese.

Producer's Notes

“The spiciness and peppery notes of this wine is remarkable – nuances of freshly ground white pepper, cumin, thyme – and the pronounced fruit of pink grapefruit, green apple and lime. Archetypical Veltliner from loess soils that displays crystal-clear structure over a delicate tartness and lively freshness. A wine to enjoy again and again.”

Awards

92 points – Falstaff Austrian wine guide
[Translated] “Medium greenish yellow, silver reflections. Ripe yellow apple fruit with a delicate tobacco-spicy background, delicate mango, orange zest, delicate floral aspects, inviting bouquet. Juicy, ripe apricots, acidity rich in finesse, long-lasting flavours, salty and lemony on the finish, a multi-faceted accompaniment to food.”

4 Star Winery Rating – Falstaff Austrian wine guide
“Franz Türk is one of the most established Grüner Veltliner producers in the country. The two-time Grüner Veltliner Grand Prix victory, the admission to the Hall of Fame in London and numerous international awards confirm these achievements.”
