Description
Eiswein vom Blauen Zweigelt 2018 is ice wine produced by Weingut Türk in Austria from the indigenous black grape variety Zweigelt, also known as Blauen Zweigelt. This makes it unusual as most Austrian ice wine or eiswein is produced from white grape, Grüner Veltliner. I like this combination of juicy red fruit flavours that come from the black grapes and the sweetness of this wine. Weingut Türk Eiswein vom Blauen Zweigelt 2018 is a beautiful, pale pink colour and a very elegant, sweet wine with a really smooth mouthfeel. It does not taste extremely sweet as you might expect because it has lots of refreshing acidity to balance the sweetness. It smells and tastes divine with aromas and flavours of cherries and red berries with dried figs and more. It is a complex wine, a little different and delicious!
Based in Lower Austria, the Türk winery is a producer whose philosophy is to produce long-lived, characterful wines rather than “large volume wines for the short-term market”. This eiswein certainly meets their criteria. Türk practise minimal intervention preferring to let the wines “express the soil, the microclimate and unique vintage character”.
Read my ice wine blogpost to discover more about this sweet wine and why not try the dry, white Grüner Veltliner from the same producer.
