Description
Invincible Number Two Douro Tinto is an amazingly smooth Portuguese red wine produced from a field blend of old vine grape varieties including Tinta Roriz (AKA Tempranillo in Spain) and port grapes, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. It is produced by Companhia de Vinhos Invencível which is a collaboration between renowned wine makers, Rita Marques who has been described as “the changing face of Douro winemaking” & Marc Kent of Boekenhoutskloof, whose wines I have been stocking for several years. Why not try Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon?
Invincible Number Two Douro Tinto 2020 displays lovely ripe black and red berry and plum flavours and complex spicy layers with a hint of orange peel – the complexity coming from the old vines which are over 50 years’ old. This wine has seen oak but it’s a very light touch just to give it a bit more of a rounded mouthfeel and the tannins are soft and smooth. One of my current favourite wines, though I know I shouldn’t have favourites!
Marc Kent and Rita Marques had previously worked together in South Africa and elsewhere in Portugal before buying an estate in Casais do Douro where this wine is produced. Number Two is the name for the range of Reserva wines. As you would expect from these wine makers, they practice minimal intervention producing wines that represents the local varieties and terroir.
